The short version: mote is a reminder app with attitude. Use it kindly, don’t abuse it, and remember that your data lives only on your device — so backing it up (or losing it) is in your hands.

1. accepting these terms

By downloading or using mote (the app) or this website, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, don’t use mote — though someone in your circle probably wishes you would.

2. what mote is

mote helps you remember to reach out to people you care about. You add people, set a cadence, and the app nudges you — in a tone you choose — when you drift. The snark, guilt trips, and mild public shaming are intentional product features, delivered privately to you. They are humor, not harassment, and you control their sharpness in Settings.

3. your license to use mote

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the app on devices you own or control, subject to these terms and the rules of the app store you installed it from (Apple’s or Google’s terms also apply to your download).

4. your data, your device

mote stores everything locally on your device and has no accounts, cloud sync, or backups (see the privacy policy). That means you own your data completely — and also that if you uninstall the app, clear its storage, or lose your phone, that data is unrecoverable by us or anyone else.

5. acceptable use

You agree not to:

6. the app is provided “as is”

mote is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. We don’t warrant that nudges will always fire on time, that streaks won’t reset, or that the app will be free of bugs. The Mote nags; it cannot make you text your mom. Your relationships, and the outcomes of maintaining or neglecting them, remain gloriously your own responsibility.

7. limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Mote Inc. is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of (or inability to use) the app — including lost data, missed birthdays, or awkward reunions. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for the app, which is currently zero.

8. changes to the app and these terms

We may update the app and these terms over time. Material changes will be reflected on this page with a new effective date. Continuing to use mote after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.

9. termination

You can stop using mote at any time by deleting the app — which also deletes every trace of your data (see the privacy policy). We may terminate this license if you breach these terms.

10. governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Mote Inc. is registered, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
